The Washington State Digital Archives makes a range of Asotin County records available online for free. You can search these records without any account or payment. The Digital Archives holds the Asotin County Birth Records from 1891 to 1913, the Register of Deaths from 1898 to 1907, and Marriage Records from 1899 to 2003. It also includes the statewide Department of Health Death Certificates collection from July 1, 1907 to 1997 with index and images, plus the Death Index covering 1907 to 1960 and 1965 to 2020.

For genealogy researchers, the Digital Archives is an excellent place to begin. You can confirm whether a record exists, review the images online, and narrow down the details before deciding whether to order a certified copy. The images available through the Digital Archives are not certified copies and cannot be used for legal purposes. If you need a legal document, you must order a certified copy through the Health District, the Auditor, or the state DOH. But for research, the free online access saves a lot of time and effort.

Note: The statewide Death Index from 1965 to 2020 is searchable as an index only. Actual images of certificates may not be available for more recent records due to privacy restrictions under RCW Chapter 70.58A.

Genealogy Resources for Asotin County

Asotin County has a small but dedicated set of genealogy resources. The Asotin County Historical Society maintains local historical records including family histories, photographs, local business records, and cemetery records. The Historical Society has published materials on local history and can provide research assistance for people tracing early settlers in the Snake River region. Their collection covers the Clarkston and Asotin areas along the Washington-Idaho border.

The Washington State Archives Eastern Regional Branch in Cheney is the main repository for original Asotin County court and probate records. The address is 960 Washington Street, Cheney, WA 99004, and the phone is (509) 235-7508. You can also reach them by email at eabrancharchives@sos.wa.gov. Holdings include Superior Court records, probate files, naturalization records, and historical vital statistics. The original death registers from 1898 to 1907 are available on microfilm here. The research room is open to the public, but appointments are recommended for extended research visits.

Probate records at the archives are a valuable supplement to death certificates. An estate file names the deceased, confirms the date of death, lists heirs, and describes property. For people who died before 1907 or whose death certificates are incomplete, probate records can fill in key details. Many of these older files are also indexed in the Digital Archives system, so you can often find them without a trip to Cheney.
