The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is the primary office for Tacoma death records. They hold certified copies of death certificates for all deaths occurring in Tacoma from 1907 to the present, and for Pierce County from 1926 to the present. Their scope is broad. When you visit, bring a valid government-issued photo ID. For certified copies, you also need documentation of your relationship to the deceased. Qualifying family members include spouses, children, parents, siblings, grandparents, and others listed under Washington State law. The department also issues burial and cremation permits for deaths occurring in Pierce County.
Tacoma Death Certificate Fees and Ordering
The base fee for a Tacoma death certificate is $25 per certified copy. This fee is set by state law and applies regardless of how you order. An additional identity verification fee of $15 per order may apply. There is also a reduced fee for next-day pick-up in some cases. Total online cost is $48.50, which includes the $25 certificate fee, a $12.50 health department processing fee, and $11.50 for VitalChek. Processing takes 3 to 7 business days. Optional express shipping is available at extra cost.
Mail requests go to 3629 South D Street, Tacoma, WA 98418. Include your request form, a photocopy of your photo ID, documentation of your relationship to the deceased, and a check or money order payable to Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. Do not send cash or originals. Mail processing takes several weeks.
In-person visits allow same-day service during business hours. This is the best option when time is short. Bring all required documents and your payment. Staff can produce copies while you wait in most cases.
